Mission and objectives

The World Health Organization serves as the directing and coordinating authority for public health within the United Nations system. WHO seeks to promote health, ensure everyone can attain the highest level of health, keep the world safe and serve the vulnerable through partnerships, people and countries.

Context

This UNV assignment is part of the WHO Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer, which is a five-year collaborative effort between WHO and St Jude Children’s Research Hospital to increase care access, quality, and integration of childhood cancer in national and global agendas. The overall objective of the Initiative is to measurably improve health outcomes and to reduce suffering for children by scaling-up the capacity of Member States to provide quality services for children with cancer, and to increase prioritization of childhood cancer in national priority benefit packages.

Task description

Under the direct supervision of the Technical Officer for Cancer, the Regional Adviser on NCD Prevention at the Noncommunicable Diseases Prevention (NCP) unit and the overall guidance of the Director, UHC/Noncommunicable Diseases, WHO EMRO, the incumbent is expected to contribute to the implementation of the RFA on cancer prevention and control with a focus on the regional roll out of the WHO Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer, and will include the following responsibilities: 1. Review available literature for regional/country situation analysis on childhood cancer; 2. Develop presentations, progress reports and briefs on childhood cancer; 3. Assist in in drafting, formatting and editing normative and communication document on the WHO Global Initiative for Childhood Cancers initiative and liaise with necessary partners across the three levels of WHO; 4. Support the adaptation and dissemination of GICC technical package and tools in the Eastern Mediterranean Region; 5. Assist in organizing regional and country meetings/workshops including webinars related to GICC; 6. Assist in monitoring GICC implementation progress in priority countries, liaising with WHO Country offices, project partners and contributing to the documentation of country progress/case studies/reports to donors; 7. Support efforts towards enhancing palliative care in the region; provide coordination facilitation for the WHO EMR Palliative Care Network and implementation of the 2023 PC Network Roadmap; 8. Engage in regional efforts for enhancing governance for childhood cancers and cancers in general, namely through multisectoral action, investment cases etc.; 9. Contribute to the review and production of relevant WHO publications and proposals; 10. Provide support to other related areas of cancer work as deemed appropriate, namely other WHO global initiatives being implemented in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (Global Cervical Cancer Elimination Strategy and Global Breast Cancer Initiative); 11. Develop and submit a progress report at the end of the assignment. *Results/expected outputs

  •  As an active WHO team member, efficient, timely, responsive, client-friendly, and high-quality support rendered to WHO and its beneficiaries in the accomplishment of her/his functions, including:
  •  The incumbent is expected to contribute to the implementation of the Regional Framework for Action (RFA) on cancer prevention and control with a focus on the regional roll out of the WHO Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer;
  •  Age, Gender and Diversity (AGD) perspective is systematically applied, integrated and documented in all activities throughout the assignment;
  •  A final statement of achievements towards volunteerism for peace and development during the assignment, such as reporting on the number of volunteers mobilized, activities participated in and capacities developed.

Required experience

3 years of experience in Clinical or academic experience in the field of cancer control/oncology and in conducting literature reviews. and; – Clinical or academic experience in childhood cancer; – Field and/or developing country experience in the field of cancer control; – Relevant experience, especially in countries in the EMR;

  •  Strong communication and interpersonal skills to nurture ongoing partnership and collaboration efforts;
  •  Good organizational and project management skills, including ability to work independently and deliver high quality results in a timely manner;
  •  Excellent drafting skills in English.

Required education level

Bachelor degree or equivalent in medicine, public health, or related areas directly relevant to cancer control.
