Organizational Setting and Work Relationships

The Senior Private Sector Engagement Officer is the lead focal point at headquarters for marketing and visibility of UNHCR’s global private sector partnerships. S/he will contribute to the strategic goals of PSP through the strategic planning, development and delivery of communications and marketing strategies, assets, tools, resources, and guidance for global partnerships with companies, foundations and high-net worth individuals – to increase brand awareness, trust, engagement, and ultimately accelerate income for UNHCR. This marketing and communication support will enable private sector fundraisers to reach out to new potential prospects; engage new partners; cultivate, grow, and strengthen existing partnerships – to deliver increased resources to UNHCR¿s budget. The incumbent will establish strong working relationships with the PSP network and National Associations and help build their capacity to engage with the private sector, but also work towards the wider organizational goal of UNHCR to increase its supporter base and expand its brand. The incumbent will work in close collaboration with: all the teams in the Private Sector Partnerships Service; Global Communications Service, including News and Media Section, Social Media Section, Crisis Communications; Donor Relations and Resource Mobilization Service; Digital Engagement Section; Brands Unit; Events Unit; and other relevant stakeholders. S/he will also work closely with the Regional Bureaus and Field colleagues to ensure close coordination on private sector communications and engagement.

Duties

– Lead planning and executing top-notched communications and marketing strategies, products and initiatives to a growing number of multi-million global partnerships with companies, foundations and high-net worth individuals.

– Ensure appropriate visibility to global partnerships.

– Provide strategic marketing and communication direction, capacity building and quality technical support to the PPH heads of income streams in headquarters; private sector fundraisers in the regions and in PSP markets.

– Provide support to Regional Bureaus and Field colleagues on private sector visibility requirements, to ensure close coordination on private sector communications and engagement.

– In coordination with account managers, scale up opportunities and corporate partnerships to mobilize Individual Giving funds through private sectors¿ customers, clients and employees; increase the brand equity of UNHCR; sensitize and engage key audiences by using UNHCR¿s communication channels, emergencies¿ appeals, new digital and traditional platforms, and networks provided by private partners.

– Ensure that the communication plans and strategies of global private sector partnerships are aligned with UNHCR¿s advocacy and communication strategies, with the aim of maximizing PSP income and brand exposure, and achieving the objectives of UNHCR¿s Communication Strategy.

– Scale up marketing and communication opportunities to strengthen private sector engagement with emergencies (i.e. emergency fund for PPH).

– In coordination with the Global Communications Service, strengthen and grow UNHCR¿s presence on business media and high-level events (i.e. WEF and UNGA).

– Engage from the start with relevant internal actors (PSP, digital, advocacy, communications, brand, PSP markets and UNHCR¿s engagement pillars, divisions and operations) to ensure a whole of organization approach where possible, feasible and strategic, and to ensure communication strategies with private companies are done with the widest strategic goals in mind.

– Manage communication budgets and ensure clear timelines, ROIs and communication KPIs for each partnership.

– Oversee external vendors/creative agency engagement, build effective and efficient relationships and manage project budgets and deliverables.

– Ensure innovative and creative approaches to ensure UNHCR¿s competitive advantage. Assess viability of new ideas and initiatives as they arise.

– Manage and coordinate a small team, cross-trained in different marketing and communication skills. Oversee contractors who are hired on contract basis.

– Conduct regular media and social media checks to identify any potential reputational risk for UNHCR¿s global partnerships, devise and implement mitigation strategies and advise management of such risks.

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Professional Work Experience

For P4 – 9 years relevant experience with Undergraduate degree; or 8 years relevant experience with Graduate degree; or 7 years relevant experience with Doctorate degree

Relevant Job Experience

Essential

– Proven experience in developing, managing and evaluating high-impact marketing and communication strategies, products and tools for private sector audiences.

– Proven experience in delivering strategies and products to support relations with business media, public awareness, advocacy, social media and fundraising goals.

– Demonstrated familiarity with the work of UN and experience in building and managing impactful private sector partnerships on behalf of a UN entity or not-for-profit organization, including financial and non-financial collaboration (inter alia knowledge sharing, in-kind donations, employee giving, campaign development and cause related marketing); or experience managing collaborations or projects with non-profit organizations on behalf of a company, foundation or other philanthropic vehicle.

– Ability to produce high quality written materials tailored to specific audiences/markets.

– Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills.

– Proven ability to think conceptually and critically, and to find, synthesize and interpret large amounts of information.

– Strong result-oriented and service-oriented attitude.

– Willingness to travel frequently

Desirable

– Thorough knowledge of UNHCR operational arrangements, its relief and protection programmes, the funding needs and priorities.

– Strong grasp of international issues and media landscape.

– Experience and understanding of the role of brand in building audience.

– Proficiency in another relevant UN language.

The Senior Private Sector Engagement Officer is part of the Private Partnerships and Philanthropy Section (PPH) within UNHCR’s Private Sector Partnerships (PSP) Section, based in Copenhagen, where s/he will lead a team of 4-5 people. S/he will be the lead focal for communications, marketing and visibility of UNHCR’s partnerships with corporates, foundations, and high-net worth individuals.
