The internship is located in the Crime Research Section, Research and Analysis Branch (RAB), Division for Public Affairs (DPA), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Vienna (Austria). The intern will work under the direct supervision of Professional staff of the section. Duration: This position is for an initial period of two months, to take place between May and August 2023. Extension to a maximum period may be possible subject to the needs of the office and the availability of the intern. The Research and Analysis Branch (RAB) is centrally responsible within UNODC for the collection and analysis of data on drugs and crime trends. The Crime Research Section is developing a global research project on illicit trafficking of cultural property. For this purpose, Crime Research Section is looking for a qualified intern to help construct a pilot database of trafficked cultural property. Responsibilities
The intern shall undertake the following duties which may include, but are not limited to:
- Contribute to the conceptualization of a database designed to track trends in trafficked cultural property.
- Proactively source data for this database through on-line incident research and liaison with national partners.
- Enter identified and formatted incident information into the database.
- Perform a pilot analysis of the data.
- Perform other tasks as necessary. After a two-month assignment, the intern will gain experience in:
- International research topics related to UNODC mandates, with a particular focus on areas of global common interest, such as cultural property.
- Regulatory and legal aspects of the global trade of cultural objects.
- Threat assessment methodology.
- Data processing and tabulation.

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
- Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). (OFFICIAL WRITTEN PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY SUPPORTING ONE OF THE ABOVE POSSIBILITIES MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION);
- Be computer literate in standard software applications;
- Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
- Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. For this internship, a background in the field of liberal arts, classics, archeology, or ancient history is recommended. Knowledge of MS Word and Excel is essential and some experience in social research (or comparable study area) would be an asset.
