This internship position is placed within the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Section (Division of Treaty Affairs) of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), located in Vienna, Austria. The selected candidate will work on issues related to crime prevention and criminal justice reform (including community-based crime prevention, access to justice, violence against women and children as well as prison reform) under direct supervision of the relevant substantive officer in the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Section. This vacancy announcement is for 1 internship position starting in April 2023 for a period of four to six months. Please be advised that the internship is full-time in Vienna and UNPAID. Responsibilities

Under overall supervision of the Chief of the Justice Section, and under direct supervision of the relevant substantive officer, the selected candidates will support the Section in implementing the Office’s Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice related work as per Thematic Area 5 of the UNODC Strategy 2021-2025. More specifically, the candidate will be responsible for the following duties:

  •  Conduct research on political and legal aspects of crime prevention and criminal justice reform and contribute to the preparation of UNODC publications, background notes, reports, briefing materials, presentations, correspondences with Member State governments, talking points and speeches;
  •  Assist in staff members’ preparation of technical assistance missions, workshops, meetings, high-level events and conferences, including support to field offices;
  •  Attend and take notes at various meetings;
  •  Perform other tasks as necessary.

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

  •  Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).   •  Be computer literate in standard software applications;
  •  Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
  •  Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
