Organizational context

The internship will be within UNHCR’s Private Sector Partnerships Service, which sits within the Department of External Relations (DER), with close collaboration with the Education Section in Division of Resilience and Solutions (DRS), and Division of Financial and Administrative Management (DFAM). This exciting internship is a unique opportunity to work in a cross-functional programme team within the UN system and gain experience in programme assistance with a focus on donor financial reporting.

The Private Sector Partnerships Services (PSP) operates from Copenhagen, the extended arm of UNHCR’s Headquarters, with global coverage through Regional Managers, National PSP Offices and National Partners. The role of Private Sector Partnerships is to raise funds from the private sector, including corporations, foundations, high net worth individuals, and individual donors.

One of the biggest private sector donors to UNHCR is the Education Above All Foundation, supported by Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser of Qatar, which is the umbrella organization for Educate a Child (EAC) Programme. The objective of the EAC Programme to significantly reduce the number of children worldwide who are missing out on their right to primary education. In UNHCR, the EAC Programme is currently implemented in 15 countries in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and the Americas, with potential extension over the coming years.

The position

We are seeking a dynamic and proactive team player, with a strong interest in fundraising, donor reporting and refugee issues, to complete a six-month internship within UNHCR’s PPH Team. The intern will be working in a dynamic cross-functional team to support the financial donor reporting, financial monitoring and other programme support activities. You will work closely with the EAC Senior Programme Assistant and EAC Donor Focal Point to streamline the timely delivery of the 2022 Annual Report, and support the review and development of a new multi-year programme proposal. You will also support with formulating and refreshing budgets for proposals for fundraising purposes.

The EAC Programme Internship is located in Copenhagen but will provide desk-based support for colleagues globally.

Duties and responsibilities

Financial Monitoring and Reporting

  • Support the EAC HQ team in the monitoring of the financial implementation of the programme and draw attention to potential challenges that need further intervention;
  • Assist in the validation of the 2022 annual donor financial reports;
  • Review and update the “matching grants” income reports on a monthly basis;
  • Support the EAC HQ team in the review and development of new programme proposals.

Team Collaboration and Communication Tools

  • Support in the development and maintenance of the team collaboration platforms in SharePoint and MS Teams;
  • Update the EAC Programme Contact List;
  • Assist the EAC HQ team meetings and keep a record of the meeting notes;
  • Perform other duties as requested.

Minimum qualifications required

In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Be either a recent graduate (having completed their studies within two years of applying) or a current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by IAU/UNESCO; and
  • Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of UNHCR.

NOTE: An individual whose father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister is a staff member of UNHCR, including a Temporary Appointment holder or a member of the Affiliate Workforce, is not eligible for an internship.

Desirable qualifications and skills

  • University degree in Business/International Administration, Political Science/International Relations, Finance or another related discipline.
  • Have good experience using the Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
  • Capable of maintaining databases and filing systems for project management.
  • Basic knowledge of SharePoint is desired.
  • Have excellent communication skills with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Have advanced level of written and spoken English;
  • Demonstrate a genuine desire to learn and develop.
  • Be highly organized and have good attention to detail.
  • Be able to multi-task and to priorities workload.
  • Be a flexible, team-player.

Conditions

It is a full-time role with working hours starting from 8.30am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday (40 hours per week). The successful candidate will be assigned to support the PPH team at UN City, Copenhagen, Denmark. Depending on the circumstances, there is a possibility the successful candidate will perform certain duties remotely and/or from at home. Recruitment as a UNHCR staff member and engagement under a UNHCR affiliate scheme or as an intern is subject to proof of vaccination against Covid-19.

For non-EU candidates, D-visa needs to be obtained before traveling to Denmark which takes 4 to 6 weeks. The office will provide assistance on visa-related issues.

Allowance: Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive an allowance to partially help to cover the cost of food, local transportation and living expenses.
