Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

Context:

Background Information

The IOM approach to international labour migration is to foster the synergies between labour migration and development, and to promote legal avenues of labour migration as an alternative to irregular migration. Moreover, IOM aims to facilitate the development of policies and programmes that are in the interest of migrants and society, providing effective protection and assistance to labour migrants and their families. In particular, the Labour Mobility and Social Inclusion Unit aims to maximize the positive impacts of migration for migrants, their families and the broader community in countries of origin and destination. This includes strengthening the links between migration and development, particularly through diaspora engagement in development initiatives.

Supervision

Under the direct supervision of the Transnational Communities and Digital Communication Officer, and in cooperation with other colleagues in the Division, at IOM HQ and field Missions, the Intern will be responsible for assisting the global diaspora engagement activities including the management of the iDiaspora platform, organization of events and development of communication materials.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  1. Assist in the management of iDiaspora Platform, including knowledge management and communication tasks.
  2. Produce graphic material and content for the iDiaspora platform and its social media channels using Canva and relevant tools.
  3. Support the creation of the quarterly Global Diaspora Newsletter using Mailchimp.
  4. Support the iDiaspora team in coordinating outreach and fundraising activities.
  5. Prepare briefing notes, presentations, and hand-outs for meetings. Assist with background notes and talking points for events.
  6. Support in the drafting of key documents and reports.
  7. Provide assistance in curating and presenting stories, images, videos and content in the iDiaspora platform.
  8. Assist in drafting, translating, and reviewing documents as required.
  9. Assist in the hiring of service providers when necessary.
  10. Support the Team in the preparation of virtual and onsite high-level events.
  11. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Training Components and Learning Elements

Due to the fact that some of the bilateral agreements were signed many years ago, they require updating.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Education

Master’s Degree in Political Science, Social sciences, International Relations, Migration Studies, Global Affairs, or related field.

Experience

  • Have experience using editing and communication tools;
  • Have experience organizing international events online and in person;
  • Experience with content production, writing and drafting of texts for various purposes (social media, press release, reports, etc).

Skills

  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Ability to work independently;
  • Self-starter.

Languages

IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish.

For this position, fluency in English and Spanish is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of French is an advantage.

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

Eligibility and Selection

In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who:

  1. have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOMprogrammes and activities;
  2. are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations and/or for whom internship is required to complete their studies; or
  3. are sponsored by governmental/non governmental institutions and/or academia to work in specific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor.
  4. are either enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme(minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) or have graduated in the last 12 months. e) are between 20 and 36 years of age.

  • Depending on experience and location, IOM provides a small monthly stipend to help offset costs.

Competencies will be assessed during a competency-based interview.

Other:

The appointment is subject to funding confirmation.

Appointment will be subject to certification that the candidate is medically fit for appointment, accreditation, any residency or visa requirements, and security clearances. Subject to certain exemptions, vaccination against COVID-19 will in principle be required for individuals hired on or after 15 November 2021. This will be verified as part of the medical clearance process.
