This position is located within the United Nations Investigative Team for Accountability of Da’esh / ISIL (UNITAD) and will be based in Baghdad, Iraq. The post is in the Economic Crimes Unit. The incumbent will report to the Senior Legal Officer, Team Leader. UNITAD was established by the Secretary-General pursuant to Security Council resolution 2379 (2017), according to which it is mandated to support domestic efforts to hold ISIL (Da’esh) accountable by collecting, preserving and storing evidence in Iraq of acts that may amount to war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide committed by the terrorist group ISIL (Da’esh) in Iraq.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Information Analyst, Political Affairs will be responsible for the following duties:

  •  Maintain understanding of developments/events relevant for the implementation of the Mission mandate through monitoring and collection of data/information from multiple sources, including national military/civilian authorities, NGOs, media and other key stakeholders.
  •  Classify, manage, store and transfer information.
  •  Carry out searches of in-house and open source materials regarding topics relevant to the mandate.
  •  Organize, review, analyse and synthesise information and evidence for the identification of trends, production of forecasts and assessments.
  •  Produce accurate and timely analytical reports and briefings, in coordination with other Mission components and sources. Contribute to effective working relationships within the team and other UN Mission components, the UNCT and relevant external actors and organizations.
  •  Maintain a system for classifying and storing confidential information, in consultation with information management/technology expertise.
  •  Perform other duties as required.

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, foreign affairs, law or related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience and relevant academic/professional qualifications, such as accreditations from military or government command and staff colleges, may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.Work Experience

A minimum of five (05) years of progressively responsible experience in the intelligence or information analysis, political science, international relations, journalism, development, security (military or police) or related field is required. At least two years of experience in research, analysis and drafting of analytical reports within the context of criminal investigations is required. At least one year of experience working for an international tribunal or international investigative mechanism is required. Experience working with the United Nations or a comparable international organization, is desirable. Experience working in criminal investigations in the Middle East is desirable. Experience in working in investigations or intelligence analysis in relation to ISIL (Da’esh) is desirable.Languages

For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge in Arabic is desirable. Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.Assessment
