The Private Sector Partnerships Unit (PSP) sits within the Donor Relations Division under the Department of External Relations. The objective of the Private Sector Partnerships Unit is to provide the Headquarters, Regional and Country Offices with assistance and expertise relating to initiating, establishing and maintaining partnerships with the private sector. The Private Sector Partnerships Unit is responsible for the development and implementation of IOM’s Private Sector Strategy which seeks to enhance how IOM works with the private sector to support safe, orderly and regular migration. The Private Sector Partnerships Unit establishes and coordinates IOM’s due diligence process, builds staff capacity in private sector partnership-building and oversees the Goodwill Ambassador programme.

The private sector engagement strategy 2023 – 2027 is an ambitious five-year plan that sets forth a proven approach based on three main pillars – impact, income and innovation. The strategy will assist IOM to enhance partnerships with the private sector to foster change in corporate values and practices; enhance protection of migrants’ rights; generate innovative technical partnerships that capitalize upon business expertise and capabilities and grow flexible funding that can support programme implementation and impact globally and advance implementation of the Global Compact for Migration.

Under the overall supervision of the Chief, Donor Relations Division, and direct supervision of the Head of Private Sector Partnerships Unit, the Communications Officer (Private Sector) will be responsible for effective and targeted communication in support of the implementation of IOM’s Private Sector Strategy.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

Communications and Marketing:

  1. In collaboration with the PSP team, Media and Communications Unit (MCU), OnlineCommunications Unit (OCU) and Information Communications Technology (ICT), lead the development and eventual maintenance of IOM’s on-line fundraising technological capacities and IOM’s PSP website and Islamic Philanthropy webpage, including the content curation coordinated with relevant organizational units to feature unique and high-profile partnerships, events, initiatives, expressions of interest and related content as well as the re-packaging, writing, editing, and commissioning of content and assets, including those submitted by field communication staff and others.
  2. In collaboration with the PSP team and MCU, develop and implement a communications/media and marketing investment plan aimed to increase IOM’s visibility and key partnerships with the private sector and fundraising opportunities. Support strengthening IOM’s presence in business media, including with the development of content and assets and ensure frequent and regular news outputs for IOM’s private sector partnerships, including briefing notes, press releases, fact sheets, press lines etc.
  3. Develop, maintain, update and coordinate the implementation of an appropriate communications and marketing plan and yearly roadmaps for internal and external communications to support private sector partnerships and fundraising activities and enhance the visibility, reputation and positioning IOM’s brand.
  4. Oversee the development, maintenance and enhancement of partnerships and fundraising communication messages and materials as needed for the implementation of the Private Sector Strategy including for the Islamic Philanthropy Fund and Goodwill Ambassador Programme. Review and provide clearance for private sector partnership-related communications globally and manage IOM’s brand in private sector partnership activities, ensuring compliance with IOM regulations and strategic priorities.

Partnerships and private sector engagement:

  1. Implement plans for donor / partner stewardship with the objective of increasing private sector revenue and engagement with existing and new partners.
  2. Develop communications material to support IOM’s private sector outreach as outlined in the Private Sector Strategy: regular social media pieces, newsletters, blogs, photo albums, human interest stories, videos as well as brochures, fliers, infographics, talking points, presentations, event logistics and coordination, merchandize, etc.
  3. Work with Media and Communications Unit and IOM field staff to produce content in the form of human-interest stories from the field, photographs, and video clips for a global audience of private sector partners.
  4. Support media and communications moments with Goodwill Ambassadors, key private sector partners including writing key messages, draft media releases, briefing Ambassadors for interviews, speech writing, captions, quotes, scripting films for social.
  5. Co-lead the development of advocacy messages, products and initiatives that are tailored to different audiences to reach advocacy objectives of the Private Sector Strategy and that are evidence-informed and tailor the messaging and the language according to the audience and the objectives at hand.
  6. Coordinate and liaise with relevant staff to integrate plans as it relates to events, public engagement initiatives, campaigns, communications and outreach involving private sector stakeholders
  7. Develop and maintain a comprehensive range of internal and external communications assets and messaging, which can be used inside the organization to advocate Private Sector strategy implementation.
  8. Support reporting, monitoring and evaluation through the development and publication of impact reports and human-interesting stories about the usage of funds collected during fundraising efforts, the impact and ROI of celebrity engagement of Goodwill Ambassador.

Digital Fundraisers/Individual Giving Campaigns:

  1. Support in the mainstreaming of fundraising initiatives into IOM communications campaigns. Together with relevant colleagues develop, launch, and manage IOM’s individual giving campaigns for thematic and geographic priorities from content development to promotion and amplification including for the Islamic Philanthropy Unit and Goodwill Ambassador Programme.
  2. Contribute to the development of fundraising plans and products for diverse fundraising activities that serve to recruit and retain loyal individual donors, moving them through a donor journey that builds a lasting connection with IOM and maximizes lifetime value and return on investment.
  3. Develop and monitor key performance indicators and analysis to support and inform digital fundraising and its implementation. Track expenditure and income recording and reporting for digital fundraisers.
  4. Ensure the compliance with the relevant national/international laws and recommendations related to fundraising trends, licensing, data protection and privacy.

Internal Coordination and Support:

  1. Support regular flow of information and knowledge exchange for the IOM community of practice on private sector partnerships
  2. Provide technical support and oversight to field offices based on best practices and emerging trends, including trainings and capacity development opportunities for IOM field staff where relevant.
  3. Perform other duties as required for the successful implementation of the Private Sector Strategy.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Education

  • Master’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Public Affairs, Journalism, Immigration and Settlement, or a related field from an accredited academic institution with five years of relevant professional experience; or,
  • University degree in the above fields with seven years of relevant professional experience.

Experience

  • At least five years (seven years for bachelor’s degree holders) of demonstrated experience with communication, media, journalism, advocacy, external relations, donor relations, partnerships and fundraising;
  • Experience in outreach and communication to companies, foundations, and individuals as well as private sector fora and platforms;
  • Experience in humanitarian communications and fundraising during emergencies an advantage; and,
  • Experience in drafting and reviewing Op-eds, messages, talking points. Strong understanding of the international global media environment.

Skills

Strong command of social media channels for marketing, fundraising and advocacy.

Languages

IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish.

External applicants for all positions in the Professional category are required to be proficient in English and have at least a working knowledge of one additional UN Language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish).

For all applicants, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of other IOM official language is an advantage.
